Codes & Standards
Standards
VE 1, Metal Cable Tray Systems
Provides technical requirements concerning the construction, testing, and performance of metal cable tray systems. It is the first joint effort of NEMA and CSA International to put in one place standards for metal trays per both NEMA and CSA methods. Download NEMA VE 1.
VE 2, Metal Cable Tray Installation Guideline
Addresses shipping, handling, storing, and installation of metal cable tray systems. Information on maintenance and system modification is also provided. Download VE 2 from the NEMA website (registration required) or purchase a hard copy from Global/IHS.
UL 568, Nonmetallic Cable Tray Systems
This standard specifies the requirements for nonmetallic cable trays and associated fittings designed for use in accordance with the rules of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) Part 1, and the National Electrical Code® (NEC). Purchase UL 568.
FG 1, Fiberglass Cable Tray Systems
Covers construction and test requirements for continuous, complete nonmetallic systems of ladder, ventilated, solid bottom cable trays, or channel type trays, intended for the support of power or control cables, or both. NEMA FG-1 was rescinded as a published standard in November 2017. If you are looking for additional information regarding this standard please contact Daniel Abbate (Daniel.abbate@nema.org).
Installation Guidelines
The Cable Tray Institute is making available the current edition of this practical guide for the proper installation of aluminum or steel cable tray systems. These guidelines will be useful to engineers, contractors, and maintenance personnel. Ongoing periodic reviews will be done to reflect advancing technology and construction techniques.
VE 2, Metal Cable Tray Installation Guidelines
Addresses shipping, handling, storing, and installation of metal cable tray systems. Information on maintenance and system modification is also provided. Download VE 2 from the NEMA website (registration required) or purchase a hard copy from Global/IHS.

Manufacturing Standards
NEMA VE 1 – This standard specifies the manufacturing requirements for metal cable trays (such as; channel cable tray, ladder cable tray, single-rail cable tray, wire mesh cable tray, solid bottom or nonventillated cable tray and trough or ventilated cable tray) and associated fittings for use in accordance with the rules of the National Electrical Code.
This standard also provides load/span class designations.
Note: NEMA VE 1 and CSA C22.2 Specification #126.1 have been harmonized without deviation, therefore this standard is in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code.
NEMA VE 1 Metal Cable Tray Systems can be obtained from Global Engineering Documents, www.global.ihs.com
NEMA FG 1 – This standard specifies the manufacturing requirements for nonmetallic (fiberglass) cable trays (such as; ladder cable tray trough or ventilated cable tray, solid bottom or nonventillated cable tray and channel cable tray) and associated fittings for use in accordance with the rules of the National Electrical Code.
NEMA FG 1 Fiberglass Cable Tray Systems can be obtained from Global Engineering Documents, www.global.ihs.com
IEC-61537 – This international standard specifies requirements and tests for cable tray systems (such as; all metal cable trays including wire mesh cable tray and nonmetallic cable trays) for the support, accommodation of cables and possibly other electrical equipment in electrical and/or communications systems installations.
IEC-61537 Cable Tray Systems and Cable Ladder Systems for Electrical Installations can be obtained from Global Engineering Documents, www.global.ihs.com
UL 568 – This Underwriters Laboratories standard covers the performance requirements for the safe application of fiberglass cable tray.
UL 568 can be obtained from Global Engineering Documents, www.global.ihs.com.
Installation Code
NFPA 70 – The National Electrical Code covers the installation requirements for the safe application of cable tray systems including ladder, ventilated trough, ventilated channel, solid bottom and other similar structures.
Article 392 provides requirements such as "Uses Permitted", which includes wiring methods permitted to be installed in cable tray, the "Cross Sectional Area Requirements for Cable Trays Used as Equipment Grounding Conductor" and the "Maximum Allowable Fill Area for Single-Conductor and Multi-Conductor Cables"
Article 310 provides the ampacities of conductors.
The NEC can be obtained from NFPA, www.nfpacatalog.org.
CEC C22.1-Part 1 – The Canadian Electrical Code is a safety standard for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment in Canada.
